Ashok Patnaik Memorial Sports Award for the year 2011 was conferred on cueist Ashutosh Padhy, eminent archer Rajesh Hasdak and Shri Bira Hanuman Circus and Physical Institute here today. Former State Sports Director Bimalendu Mohanty and senior journalist Dilip Satpathy presented the awards in a function at Orissa Diploma Engineers Association Bhawan on occasion of 13th death anniversary of eminent sports journalist Ashok Patnaik.
Sub-junior National snooker champion Ashutosh bagged the award as the best young sportsperson, while Rajesh Hasdak, who represented India in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, received it as the best coach. Shri Bira Hanuman Circus and Physical Institute (SBHCPI) was given the award as the best organisation, promoting weightlifting, bodybuilding and yoga for the past 70 years. Products of the institute include eminent lifters Bijay Kumar Satpathy, K Ravi Kumar and Ranu Mohanty.Secretary Narayan Sahu took the award on behalf of the Berhampur-based institute.
Sports journalist Tapan Swain and Jagdish Das were honoured on the occasion. Around 100 well-known sportspersons, coaches and organisers of the city were present in the function.
Past recipients of the award, which was instituted in the year 2000, include well-known sportspersons Singhu Marandi, Prabodh Tirkey, Budhuram Singh, Subhadra Pradhan, Srabani Nanda, Amiya Kumar Mallick, Jhililata Sena, Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Sasmita Mallick, Padmini Rout, Ranjita Mohanta, Debasish Das; eminent coaches Arun Kumar Das, Kishore Mania, Nanda Kishore Patnaik, Subash Chandra Dasmohapatra, Panchanan Gantayat, Satya Ranjan Patnaik, Jose Jacob, Nila Madhab Deo, Subodh Jena, Mohammad Sahid Jabbar and sports bodies Veteran Football Players` Association, Shri Jagannath Martial Arts Coaching and Research Institute, R D Youth Club, Jajpur Kabaddi Association and Utkal Karate School.
